Lithium Battery Buying Guide for Solar Backup
By MST Editorial Team · 13 Sept 2026
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries have largely replaced lead-acid for solar backup thanks to longer cycle life, higher usable capacity and lower total cost of ownership over the system's lifetime.
How Much Capacity Do You Need?
Estimate your essential backup load in kWh per day (lights, fans, fridge, router, a few sockets) and multiply by your desired backup hours. Most households land between 5kWh and 15kWh.
Compatibility Matters
Not every battery works with every inverter. Rack-mount batteries like the Pylontech US3000C are supported by a wide range of hybrid inverters, while stackable modules like the Dyness DL series follow their own protocol — always check the "Compatible Products" section on the battery's product page.
Cycle Life & Warranty
Look for 6000+ cycle ratings at 80% depth of discharge and a minimum 10-year warranty — this is now standard among reputable brands like Pylontech, Dyness and Hithium.
